Lovely Bokeh

I’ve been somewhat on a bokeh kick lately. I know it’s been around for a long while, and I was a bit hesitant to play around with the idea of it in my images, because I didn’t want my work to appear “kitschy” or trendy. But I’ll have to admit it’s a lot of fun and when used with discretion and thoughtfulness, it’s quite lovely!

Also, during the holidays is a perfect time to capture some great bokeh to add to your images as your main subjects or as backgrounds.

For those of you who’ve never played around with it, here’s some tips I’ve learned:

1. Bokeh is essentially out of focus points of light, creating a soft “blurred” look
2. Large apetures work best, such as f1.8 or f2.8
3. Getting closer to the subject works better than distance, use long focal lengths
4. Use manuel focus
5. Prime lenses seem to create the most beautiful bokeh!
6. Have fun! And share your work here!

  1. Any technique is just a tool – but as you say, a tool that should not be over used.

  2. you’re so right, Robert!
